# Preferences

> Configure sales tax and account preferences

Go to **Settings > Preferences** to configure account-wide settings like sales tax behavior.

## Sales tax

CardOps can help you account for sales tax on expenses. You configure two things:

1. **Tax rate** — your applicable sales tax percentage
2. **Application mode** — how the tax is applied

### Application modes

You can choose between two modes:

* **Automatic** — sales tax is applied to every expense automatically when it's created or imported
* **Calculate button** — a button appears on expenses that you click to apply the calculated tax amount

<Warning>
  The **calculate button** mode is recommended. When entering a quick expense like a UPS shipping cost where sales tax is already included in the amount, you don't want the tax applied twice. The calculate button gives you control over when tax is added.
</Warning>

### When to use each mode

| Mode                 | Best for                                                                                        |
| -------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Automatic** | Sellers who consistently need tax added to manually-entered expenses |
| **Calculate button** | Sellers who import expenses with pre-calculated totals and only need tax on some manual entries |

## Other preferences

Additional preference options are available in this section as CardOps evolves. Check back after updates for new configuration options.
